How it works

Does it affect your comfort or your equipment? No. Activations are short — typically seconds to minutes — and designed not to affect your comfort or your equipment. Your home delivers frequency reserves in the background while everything works as normal.

NM1 works in three steps: you connect your device, we sell its flexibility as FCR-D to Energinet, and your share of the earnings is paid out to you.

1. Connect

You connect your home with the product that fits your setup. The device needs stable wifi, typically 2.4 GHz:

  • Plug for electric radiators and fan heaters you don't use — plug it in and sign up with NM1, done.
  • HeatSync for Metro Therm hot water tanks — fitted by a licensed electrician.
  • Balance for larger installations from 10 kW.

If you already own a Shelly or a home battery with a supported inverter (incl. Solplanet), we connect it through the integrations.

See the full line-up on the products page.

2. We optimise and bid

Energinet — the operator of the Danish power grid — buys frequency reserves in daily auctions: one auction for each of the day's 24 hours. NM1 aggregates your and other households' devices into one virtual power plant and bids the combined flexibility as FCR-D.

If the bid wins, your device stands ready in those hours. It is only activated when the grid frequency deviates — briefly and fully automatically.

Illustrative example — not actual prices
Hour Bid capacity Status
00:00–01:00 Full Standby
06:00–07:00 Full Standby
07:00–08:00 Full Activated
12:00–13:00 Partial Standby
18:00–19:00 Full Activated
23:00–24:00 Full Standby

And so it continues around the clock — 24 auctions in total. Most hours your device simply stands by; an activation lasts seconds to minutes.

We orchestrate the devices — keeping them in tune with the grid.

3. You get paid

Auction earnings
When the bid is accepted in Energinet's auction, the aggregated pool earns money for standing ready — hour by hour.
Shared earnings
The earnings are shared between you and NM1. See what your device can earn under calculate your earnings.
Quarterly payout
Your share is paid out once per quarter.
eSett settlement
Behind the scenes NM1 is settled through eSett, which handles imbalance settlement in the Nordic power market — your payout arrives as an ordinary bank transfer.

How much it adds up to depends on FCR-D prices and your device type — try the earnings calculator.

Earnings depend on, among other things, market prices, Energinet's needs, regulation and your own consumption and equipment, and they can change over time. FCR-D prices are set in daily auctions. Historical earnings are no guarantee of future earnings.
